As the mom of a young adult with a disability, I am acutely aware of the unemployment rate for adults with disabilities.  When we started PunkinFutz, we made employment for adults with disabilities central to our mission.  75% of all PunkinFutz employees have a disability and all original PunkinFutz products are produced in the US by adults with disabilities.  It's why our quality is so high!
What supports exist for adaptive employment?
In New York State, the Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) provides the starting point for many other services and programs.  Their new "Front Door" approach helps new applicants know how to start their application process.  You can find your "Front Door" here.  They will ask you to attend a "Front Door" informational session.  Find your session here.

In New York State, ACCES-VR is another essential resource: Assisting individuals with disabilities to achieve and maintain employment and to support independent living.  An overview of their services can be found here.
Once you have an active OPWDD Case, there are a number of programs available to assist in employment readiness, job search, and job retention supports, including:
Job Path supports people with developmental disabilities as they make choices about their lives and play valued roles in their communities. Job Path encourages people to explore what they want out of life and to chart their own journeys. Whether it’s finding a job, contributing as a volunteer, establishing a home, or joining a community group, the goal is to assist people to lead full and active lives.
YAI helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities thrive in an increasingly competitive job market. Throughout New York City, people in YAI’s supported employment program remain on the job for an average close to 8 years, filling roles in retail, healthcare, hospitality, and office services.
All activities and opportunities in the area Preparing for Work support people in achieving their vocational dreams and establishing their place in the community. AHRC New York City’s employment training services include: School to Work programs, Daily Job-Readiness programs, Internships, and Career Training programs.
HeartShare has developed and honed a suite of programs -- Prevocational, Supported Employment, Customized Employment and Pathway to Employment -- to prepare adults with developmental disabilities for competitive jobs with our respected employment partners
Project Job is a New York City-certified Minority and Woman Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) that partners with businesses and organizations to make significant contributions to society and impact the future by realizing the benefits of employing people with disabilities – whether those disabilities are inborn or acquired.

Founder Mariko Sakita is a favorite at PunkinFutz!
The professional network transforming the way candidates with disabilities, mental health conditions, and chronic illness connect to inclusive employers.
We are working to remove the fear and stigma of living with chronic illness or disability from the hiring process. We create a tacit understanding between employers and jobseekers: employers who are part of our network believe that people living with chronic illness or disability are capable of being productive employees—and jobseekers who use the platform can feel secure that participating employers care about their success.

Don't Miss the Valuable Incentives for Employers!

Many of the resources this week are New York City and New York State-based, but I am hoping they are useful in knowing what you might look for or expect in your own State.  I would love it if you would SHARE your favorite local resources, so we can do a second newsletter with greater reach for adaptive employment.  This is such an important topic!!
